Doctor Degree Program of Materials Science and Engineering

The program of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) in Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has been consistently remained in national top 5, especially No. 1 in 2003, as evaluated by the Minister of Education. In 2007, MSE in SJTU was authorized as the first-class National Key Discipline. MSE program of SJTU ranked 27 in 2017 QS world university ranking and has been listed in the world top 0.1% discipline of ESI for years.

MSE has nearly 100 doctoral tutors, including world-famous scientists: AcademicianYaohe Zhou, Xueyu Ruan, Jiansheng Pan, Wenjiang Ding and Liancheng Zhao, and many other influential young and middle aged experts. In addition, School of Materials Science and Engineering owns State key Laboratory of Metal Matrix Composites, National Engineering Research Center of Die & Mold CAD, Light Alloy Net Forming National Engineering Research Center, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Materials Laser Processing and Modification, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Magnesium Materials and Applications, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Advanced High-Temperature Materials and Precision Forming. The academic foundation of Materials Science and Engineering consists of “Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Materials”, “Fundamentals of Materials Science”, “Principles of Materials Processing”, etc. With these theories, we have undertaken a great number of important research assignments for a long time, such as national key engineering projects, state science and technology key projects, national natural science foundation projects, “863” projects, “973” projects and projects at the provincial and ministerial level, as well as projects supported by large and medium-sized key enterprises. Moreover, our department has energetically conducted cooperation and academic exchange with many renowned universities and corporations at home and abroad. Excellent students are sent abroad (America, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, etc.) regularly to pursue master’s degree, doctor’s degree and short-term academic exchanges.

2. Training Objective

The Doctor’s degree receivers are expected to gain solid and systematic expertise on Materials Science and Engineering, and be able to apperceive the current situation, development trends, and international academic research frontiers. They are also expected to achieve high academic and practical skills, innovation capabilities, and excellent academic communication skills, as well as skills in teaching, engineering or science and technology management.

3. Educational System and Credit

The doctor degree program lasts 3-4 years. In principle, all the courses are required to be finished at the first academic year.

5. Comprehensive Discipline Exam

After the accomplishment of courses and before the beginning of the dissertation, the PhD students should take the Comprehensive Discipline Exam, including measurement of the training plan performance, the knowledge of subject frontier field and professional skills. Comprehensive Discipline Exam is organized by tutor or research group. The tutor organizes the Examination Committee made up of 3-5 experts whose professional title is associate professor or above in this discipline or related discipline. Only when the graduates pass the examination can they start writing their dissertations.

6. Opening Report of Dissertation

PhD is required to finish the opening report before the end of third semester and after the Comprehensive Discipline Exam. The literature reading amount is no less than 100 before the opening report. The meeting of the opening report should be held in public in this discipline or related disciplines ranges, and be demonstrated by the subject group leader or 3-5 relevant experts recommend by tutors.

7. Mid-term Examination of Dissertation

The mid-term examination of dissertation should be held about one year after the opening report, students should make the periodic summary of their research, describe the content of the completed research work and initial results achieved. Mid-term Examination of Dissertation is organized by tutor or research group, and the mid-term assessment team should be made up of 3-5 experts, including the tutor, which can be combined with academic discussion.

8. Dissertation

A. The Regular Requirement

The writing format of doctor degree thesis should abide the "The requirement of doctor's or master's degree thesis writing in Shanghai Jiao Tong University". The regulation of thesis defense and degree application should abide the “Regulations of the application for the doctor's degree in Shanghai Jiao Tong University”.

B. The Quality Requirement

The research area of doctor degree thesis should be the research frontier of the subject, or solve the problem of the national important demand. Moreover, the research work should make breakthrough and innovation in a certain research area.

9. Paper publication

Before the PhD thesis defense, the degree applicant as the first author must publish at least two papers (including one SCI paper), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University must be the first unit. The concrete requirement should abide by “Regulations of the application for the doctor's degree in Shanghai Jiao Tong University”.

3. Educational System and Credit

The master degree program period is two year and a half. All the courses are required to be finished at the first academic year. The courses of “Introduction to Chinese Culture “(2 credits), “Chinese Language” (2 credits), and “English for Academic Purposes” (2 credits) are compulsory courses for all abroad graduate students.

5. Mid-term Examination

Mid-term Examination is an all-round examination including graduates’ learning attitude, completion situation of classroom learning, research progress, etc. It is required to be finished within a month at the beginning of the third semester. Only when the graduates pass the examination, can they start writing their thesis. Please find more details in “Regulations on the graduate cultivation in Shanghai Jiao Tong University”.

6. Opening Report of Dissertation

Academic Master is required to finish the opening report after the mid-term examination and before the end of third semester. The literature is required at least 50 before opening report. The meeting of the opening report should be held in public in this discipline or related disciplines ranges, and be demonstrated by the subject group leader or 3-5 relevant experts recommend by tutors.

B. The Quality Requirement

A new insight on the basic theory and special techniques of their subjects is required in the master degree thesis, or using the existing theories and the latest achievements in science and technology to solve the practical problems, which has certain theory significance and application values.

8. Paper Publication

For master program, we encourage the applicant to publish high-quality academic papers, but paper publication is not required for foreign students.
