Introduction

Hiroyuki Kokawa was a full professor of Tohoku University in Japan from 1996 to 2017, and now is a professor emeritus, Tohoku University, Japan and a chair professor, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, from 2017.


Biographical Information

Hiroyuki Kokawa was a full professor of Tohoku University in Japan from 1996 to 2017, and now is a professor emeritus, Tohoku University, Japan and a chair professor, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, P. R. China. He graduated and received his Ph. D. degree in materials science from Tohoku University in 1979. Then he joined Welding Engineering and Technology Laboratory in Department of Materials Processing at Tohoku University, where he was the director of the laboratory for 21 years till his retirement in March 2017. He has performed considerable research regarding welding metallurgy, especially on grain boundary engineering and friction stir welding. He has authored or co-authored over 200 publications, and received many awards and prizes from academic societies, such as Japan Welding Society (JWS), American Welding Society (AWS), Japan Institute of Metals (JIM), Iron and Steel Institute of Japan (ISIJ). He was President of JWS (2014-2016), Executive Board Member of Japan Welding Engineering Society (JWES), Supervisor of Japan Institute of Metals (JIM), and now Executive Board Member of Japan Light Metal Welding & Construction Association (JLWA).
