Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Magnesium Materials won three awards of "2021 International Mg Science and Technology Award"

    On December 20, 2021, the 2021 annual award ceremony of the International Mg Science and Technology Award was successfully held. The conference was jointly sponsored by the International Magnesium Society and the Journal of Magnesium and Alloys. National Engineering Research Center of Magnesium Alloy organized the conference. Baosteel Metal, Guangdong National Research Technology, Caixin Foundation are co-organizers.

    The International Mg Science and Technology Award grants awards once a year, including Person of the Year, Youth of the Year, Excellent Paper of the Year, Excellent Thesis of the Year, Standard of the Year, Innovative Process of the Year, Innovative Product of the Year, Special Contribution on Innovation of the Year, etc.

    In this year's awards, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Magnesium Materials and Applications won three awards. Prof. Xiaoqin Zeng won the Person of the Year for his outstanding achievements in the design of magnesium alloy with high strength, ductility, flame retardancy and corrosion resistance. Prof. Zeng has been engaged in the design of advanced magnesium alloys for a long time. Based on high-throughput computing technology, he has successfully developed high-strength and high-corrosion-resistant rare earth magnesium alloys. The corrosion rate of magnesium alloys is reduced by two orders of magnitude. The breakthrough of the corrosion bottleneck problem in magnesium alloys serves as a foundation for the application of magnesium alloys under extreme service conditions such as ocean.

    As a well-known expert, Prof. Liming Peng won the Special Contribution on Innovation of the Year and delivered his acceptance speech. Prof. Peng is mainly engaged in the basic and application research of advanced magnesium alloys, focusing on the strength and ductility design and microstructure analysis of magnesium alloys, as well as the research on liquid precision forming technology. Prof. Peng has made outstanding contributions to the industrial application of magnesium alloys. The high-capacity magnesium based solid hydrogen storage material and transportation device developed by Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Magnesium Materials and Applications won the award of Innovative Product of the Year. The product is for the field of hydrogen storage, transportation and application; it solved the problems of low hydrogen storage density and poor safety. Magnesium based hydrogen storage material with high hydrogen storage capacity and excellent performance is systematically developed. On this basis, a large-scale hydrogen storage and transportation system is developed, and a demonstration application is carried out.
