  • 1952 The Metal Heat Treament major was set up.
  • 1955 The Teaching and Research Office of Welding Major was set up and started to enroll undergraduates.
  • 1981 The Heat Processing Department was renamed as Materials Science and Engineering Department with the following five majors: Materials Science, Metal Materials and Heat Treatment, Casting, Forging and Welding. The above-mentioned five majors were entitled to award a master degree in the same year.
  • 1988 The Metal Materials and Heat Treatment was rated as the First Batch of National Key Disciplines.
  • 1991 The National Key Laboratory of Metal-matrix Composite passed the national acceptance test andwas openedto the public inJanuary 1992.
  • 1994 The Forging and Pressing major was separated from the Department and formed the Plastic Making Engineering Department.
  • 1996 The Department was approved to set up the National Engineering Research Centre of Mold CAD.
  • 1997 The Materials Science and Engineering Department was set up.
  • 1998 The Materials Science and Engineering discipline was rated as the first-level doctoral discipline.
  • 2000 The Department was approved to set up the National Engineering Research Center of Light Alloy Precision Shaping.
  • 2002 The Material Science and Materials Processing Engineering were rated as National Key Discipline respectively.
  • 2003 "Materials Science and Engineering" First-level Discipline was ranked the first inChina during the Higher Education and Academy Degree and Postgraduate Education Assessment.
  • 2007 The Materials Science and Engineering was incorporated into first batch of national first- level key disciplines.
  • 2011 The Plastic Making Engineering Department was officially merged into the School of Materials Science and Engineering.
  • 2013 The disciplinary structure was re adjusted and was composed of five discipline orientations again.
