Overview

The School of Materials Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University aims at material science and engineering frontier and national vital demands to carry out research and attaches great importance to the cross of disciplines. It has formed some preponderant disciplines with international influence, including advanced light metal, composite materials , material processing and manufacturing, nano-materials and new functional material, ultrastructure, material physics and chemistry, and achieved a series of researchfindings. Some relevant findings made great contribution to the national economic construction and the construction of national important areas.

The school established 14 high-level research institutes and has been undertaking major and key national subjects for many years, including Natural Science Foundation of China, science and technology support project, as well as many subjects from overseas and domestic industrial companies. Moreover, the school continues to develop the long-term strategy partner relations with Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, FAW Group, GM China Research Institute, Siemens, General Electric and other domestic and international well-known industrial companies.The school cooperates with Baotou Municipal Government to establish Shanghai Jiao Tong University Baotou Institute of Materials Research, making a solid step in the industry-study-research combination, social services and other aspects.

The school has constantly made new breakthroughs in scientific research. In recent five years, it has received scientific research funds of 1.02 billion yuan and published 1618 pieces of SCI theses. The number of theses ranks the 10th in the world and the citing times of its theses ranks the 27th in the world. The school has applied 797 patents including 454 authorizations and won 4 national second prizes, 1 China international collaboration award and 25 ministerial and provincial-level science and technology awards. Its materials discipline has been listed in ESI First 1‰ Disciplines in the world for several consecutive years. For the academic research results of the school, lots of theses have been published in the world-renowned journals such as Nature, Science and Material Sciences; multiple key technical achievements have been successfully applied to major engineering equipment of aviation, aerospace, marine, nuclear power and so on, which have played an irreplaceable role in solving critical problems in some important fields and satisfied the needs of national key projects.
