In order to further improve the Science Foundation talent funding system, give full play to the function of the Science Foundation in introducing and nurturing talents, and attract outstanding young talents from overseas to return to China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) continues to implement the NSFC Outstanding Young Scientists Fund Program (Overseas) in 2022.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University, originated from Nanyang Public School founded in 1896, is one of the famous institutions of higher education with the longest history and reputation at home and abroad. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and jointly built with Shanghai Municipality. After 126 years of unremitting efforts, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has become a domestic first-class and internationally renowned university, and further defined the vision on constructing a “comprehensive, innovative and international” world-class university.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is pioneering in setting up the discipline of Materials Science and Engineering in China, which has been composed of departments of materials science and engineering since 1997 and among which the heat treatment major was set up in 1952. The discipline of ‘materials science and technology’ is one of the first national first-degree subjects and has been consistently ranked top 1‰ in ESI. SMSE firstly set up master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral research platform, which came 20th in global QS rankings.

There are around 1,500 internal students in school, among which around 560 students are pursuing their bachelor degrees. Around 470 for master degrees and around 360 for doctoral degrees. Currently the buildings of SMSE covers an area of more than 45,500 square meters, consisting of 9 comprehensive offices and laboratory buildings that occupy 40,000 square meters.

New breakthroughs have been achieved constantly in scientific research. The materials discipline has been consistently ranked top 1‰ in ESI. Academic research achievements have been published in papers in Nature, Science, Progress in Materials Science and other leading scientific journals in the world. Over the past five years, it has been up to 10.2 hundred-million-yuan scientific research funds, up to 1618 SCI papers, where the number of published paper ranks the tenth and citation frequency ranks the twenty-seventh in global rankings. It adds up to 797 invention patents, of which 454 are authorized and 4 are awarded second prize at national levels, 1 is awarded International Scientific Cooperation Award, 25 are awarded provincial technological awards. In addition, a large number of achievements on key technology have been applied into aviation, spaceflight, naval architecture ocean engineering-nuclear power and other engineering equipment successfully, which solved key problems in national key fields and satisfied needs of national major engineering to play an indispensable role.

Through several years of deepening reform, great achievements have been achieved in several fields including talent cultivation, scientific research, social work, and cultural inheritance in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) in SJTU. What’s more, it has established the management concept of “focus on students, academic governance by professors, and promotion of democratic management” and has shaped joint vision of “making SMSE a first-class school of Materials Science and Engineering”.

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) has been aiming to cultivate high-level talents with a solid and complete professional knowledge structure, a strong ability of self-dependent innovation and international competitiveness in the field of materials science and engineering, in order to meet the needs of talents in scientific research, engineering application, scientific and technological innovation as well as organization and management.

 

Outstanding Youth (overseas) Project

It aims to attract and encourage outstanding young scholars from overseas (including non-Chinese foreign talents) who have achieved good results back (to) work in China, choose their own research direction and carry out innovative research, promote the rapid growth of young scientific and technological talents, cultivate a number of outstanding academic backbones who are expected to enter the frontiers of science and technology in the world, and contribute to the construction of a strong science and technology nation.

Applicant Eligibility

1.    Abide by the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China, have good scientific ethics and consciously practice the spirit of scientists in the new era.

2.    Be born on or after September 1st, 1982.

3.    Have a doctoral degree.

4.    The main research directions are natural science, engineering technology, etc.

5.    Have obtained a formal teaching or researching position in an overseas university, scientific research institution or corporate R&D institution for at least 36 months before April 15th, 2022. For those who have obtained the doctoral degree overseas and have made outstanding achievements, the requirements for working years may be appropriately relaxed;

6.    Have scientific research or technical achievements recognized by experts and have the potential to become an academic leader or outstanding talent in the field.

7.    Applicants have not yet returned to work in China on a full-time basis, or will return to work in China after January 1st, 2021. Applicants must resign from their overseas employment or have no overseas employment and return to work full-time in China for at least 3 years after being offered the funding.

 

Funding Model

1.    National funding intensity: 1-3 million RMB; additional funding match from the university, please contact us for details.

2.    Duration of the funding: 3 years

 

Limit Requirements

Implement the requirements of the relevant central government departments regarding the co-ordination of national science and technology talent program. The same level of national scientific and technological talents plan during the support period can only undertake one, and cannot apply against the level.
