In November 2023, the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database released the latest subject ranking data, and the materials subject of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was ranked No. 4 in the ESI domestic university rankings. In 2023, the discipline steadily rose in the rankings, improving from 17th in Jan. to 13th in Nov. , entering the top one in 10,000 ESI subjects and achieving a historic breakthrough.

According to the latest data released by ESI, SJTU has published 14,058 papers related to materials in the past 10 years, with a total of 363,771 citations and an average of 25.88 citations per paper. In this ESI ranking, from the three indicators of Top Papers, Highly Cited Papers, and Hot Papers, the materials subject of SJTU ranked 13th, entering the ranks of top one in ten thousand in the world.

The materials subject of SJTU has been ranked among the top one in 1,000 ESI subjects for more than ten consecutive years, and this time it even breaks through the top one in 10,000 subjects. In addition to the ESI ranking, SJTU's materials subject has also performed well in the globally influential QS, USNEWS, and other lists, ranking in the top 20 on average, which fully demonstrates the ever-increasing international level and influence of the materials subject of SJTU.
