The Opening Ceremony of the 9th Zhi-Hong International Summer School of Advanced Materials

On the morning of July 1, 2024, the 9th Zhi-Hong International Summer School of Advanced Materials, hosted by the School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), was inaugurated in thYiucheng Lecture Hall, Xu Zuyao Building. The theme of this year's summer school is "Future Materials". Prof. Tao Deng (Dean of the Graduate School of SJTU), Prof. Qing Dai (Dean of the SMSE), Prof. Tianquan Lin (Vice Dean of SMSE), Prof. Peng Zhang (Assistant Dean of SMSE), Prof. Sergey V. Ushakov and Prof. Chunchao Chen (lecturer representative), Xundan Xue (International Office of the Graduate School), and other relevant faculty members of the working group attended the ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Chen Shen, with 39 participants from nine countries, Russia, Serbia, Brazil, Australia, Kazakhstan, Japan, Singapore, Pakistan, and China.

Prof. Qing Dai delivered an opening speech. He first expressed a warm welcome to all the students and guests attending the Summer School, then briefly introduced the history and background of the Zhi-Hong Summer School. Since its establishment in 2016, the Zhi-Hong Summer School has provided a platform for renowned scholars and students to engage in academic and cultural activities, fostering enriching and memorable experiences. The 9th Zhi-Hong Summer School has invited renowned scholars from Arizona State University, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, University of Michigan, Kyoto University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University to give academic lectures. It also organizes interactive activities to provide a platform for exchange, friendship, and self-expression. Finally, he expressed heartfelt thanks to all the staff and volunteers and sincerely wished success for the Summer School.

Prof. Tao Deng, on behalf of SJTU, warmly welcomed all the students participating in the Summer School. He emphasized that the Zhi-Hong International Summer School aims to create a prestigious platform for international academic and cultural exchange. In the current context where global universities prioritize international exchanges, the successful organization of the Zhi-Hong Summer School will positively contribute to cultural and academic exchanges on a global scale. He hoped that students would enjoy the Summer School, make new friends, and acquire new knowledge in the upcoming two weeks.

Prof. Sergey V. Ushakov, a research professor at Arizona State University, spoke as the representative of the lecturers. Expressing his excitement about his maiden visit to China, Sergey V. Ushakov offered valuable suggestions for the scientific research of all participants, drawing from his extensive experience. He also emphasized that close interaction with scholars during the Summer School presents an enriching and unique learning opportunity that participants should cherish.

As the student representative, Zhengyang Fu, a student from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, shared his experiences and expectations, outlining the learning opportunities, living conditions, and research environment, and urging everyone to seize the opportunity to face future challenges head-on.

Dr. Chen Shen, the host of the ceremony, introduced Shanghai City, SJTU, and SMSE, as well as the Zhi-Hong International Summer School. He elaborated on the objectives and themes of the program, highlighting the esteemed faculty and the comprehensive schedule of this year's Summer School.

The final section of the ceremony is the quick Q&A. The students were actively engaged in the question and learned about the city's characteristics, the university's profile, the history of the college, and the content of the Zhi-Hong International Summer School.
