Biography
Jiansheng Pan graduated from the Department of Metallurgy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), majoring in metal heat treatment in 1959. He stayed to teach until retirement in SJTU, serving as a professor and doctoral supervisor. He was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in 2001.
Pan has devoted his entire life to the metal heat treatment industry. In the early stage, he was mainly engaged in the research of metal heat treatment process, equipment and control technology. He developed and applied many heat treatment techniques successfully, including heat treatment of ferrous metal cold extrusion die, nitrocarburizing through ammonia drop alcohol gas, short-time nitriding, austenite nitriding, microcomputer dynamic controllable nitriding and dynamic carbon potential control, etc. With the development of computer simulation technology, Pan integrated the knowledge of heat transfer, numerical analysis, elastoplastic mechanics, etc. With the knowledge of materials science, he established a mathematical model reflecting various complex phenomena in heat treatment process, and took the lead in realizing complex shapes at home and abroad. The computer simulation of heat treatment process solves the problems in actual production and promotes the transition of heat treatment from empirical to precise and intelligent technology based on scientific calculations, which has a profound impact on the modernization of manufacturing. Pan is concerned about the major development needs. Since 2006, he has dedicated himself to the research on the controllability of large forgings for domestic energy equipment. He has cooperated closely with Shanghai Heavy Machinery Plant for long-term research and development, and played a significant role in the development of large thermal forgings including million-kilowatt ultra-supercritical high and medium pressure rotor, low pressure rotor, generator rotor and large nuclear forgings including the first AP1000 evaporator forgings in the world.
Pan has been rooted in the forefront of teaching, scientific research, and technology application for 60 years and won outstanding teaching awards many times, rated as Shanghai Excellent Educator and Shanghai Model Worker. He has won 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 third prize of National Invention Award, 2 first prizes and 3 second prizes of Ministry and Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award, one of which was listed in the national key promotion plan for scientific and technological achievements, 62 invention patents and 12 utility model patents. He has also published more than 100 academic papers and 3 monographs.
