Biography
For 35 years, Wenjiang DING (MCAE) has dedicated himself to research into advanced magnesium-based alloy materials and its precision forming, and to a systematic research into the combination of magnesium and rare earth. The research has formed Chinese characteristics. He is a trailblazer in applying degradable magnesium alloy to biomaterials, developing the state-of-the-art prototype of bone implants and cardiovascular stents at an international level. Ding and his team broke the scientific taboo and created a series of new high-strength magnesium alloy materials, thus winning an international say in magnesium alloy and ushering in a new era of lightweight magnesium.
In 2000, Ding founded the National Engineering Centre (NEC) where a R&D team of more than 300 people was formed. Benign interaction between fundamental research, application and development, engineering and technology transfer has since been realised. The NEC won national awards twice and the NEC’s 20-year Major Achievement Award. Having engaged in the application and R&D of hydrogen science, especially of solid magnesium-based materials for hydrogen storage for over 10 years, Ding established the Centre of Hydrogen Science of SJTU in 2019, which is the first institute committed to research into areas such as hydrogen energy, hydrogen medicine and hydrogen agriculture.
in 2013, Ding was elected a Member of the Chinese Academy of Science So far, he has published more than 600 SCI papers in the area (three out of which were ranked ESI Highly Cited Papers over the past 10 years) and owned nearly 200 patents of invention. As the primary award winner, Ding won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award and the first prize of Shanghai Technological Invention Award. Additionally, he was also honoured with the National Outstanding Worker in Science and Technology.
