Institute of Intelligent Welding and Precision Manufacturing was founded in January 2015. It consists of three research laboratories, namely, Additive Manufacturing Restoration and Precision Finishing Laboratory, Virtual Welding Manufacturing Laboratory, and Intelligent Robotic Welding Laboratory; led by Chair Professor XiaoQi CHEN, Professor Hao LU, and Prof Shanben CHEN (Cheung Kong Scholar Program) respectively. The institute has three professors, two associate professor, three lecturers, several adjunct senior fellows, and a range of research collaborators.

The institute actively engages in the frontier research on advanced materials processing and intelligent manufacturing technologies to meet the stringent demands of precision surface finishing and structural integrity from aerospace, nuclear plants, shipbuilding and marine. Conduct scientific research on superalloy component restoration and re-manufacturing through additive manufacturing, 3D precision grinding/polishing, data fusion intelligent robotic welding, process condition monitoring and control, smart digital manufacturing, and virtual manufacturing and numerical simulation. Develop novel material processing technologies, and innovate smart manufacturing equipment.
