The academic echelon of "Ecological Materials" was founded in Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1996 by the famous material metallurgist Yaohe ZHOU, fellow of Chinese Academy of Science. Then “the Research Center of Solidification Science and Technology " was established by Professor Baode SUN, who was the current dean of the school of Materials Science and Engineering. The center was renamed to "Institute of Solidification Science and Technology (ISST)" in 2014 and it is directed by Professor Jun WANG.
The institute is composed of the materials ecology preparation laboratory and the high-temperature materials precision casting engineering laboratory. Advanced aluminum alloy and high temperature alloy of melt process and precision forming process are the main research directions. There are 17 full-time teachers, 12 full-time scientific researchers and technicians, 7 engineers and 4 postdoctoral fellow, including 4 professors, 7 associate professors and 2 senior engineers. Nearly 20 PhD/master candidates are studying in the lab at the moment.
ISST has been studying liquid metal processing for many years covering mostly aspects. Based on modern solidification science, ISST has successfully invented a world-class purification technology of aluminum melts and designed the first preparation system of ultra-high purity aluminum in China. An international advanced R&D platform of high-temperature alloy large precision casting was also set. Both of the application of basic research and the development of key technologies have achieved fruitful results. More than 100 SCI journal papers have been published in high level journals such as Acta Materialia, Scripta Materialia, Applied Physics Letters besides 72 Chinese invention patents and 1 U.S. patent have been authorized. In recent years, more than 50 research projects were undertaken and the total research funding reaches 150 million yuan.
Main Research Fields:
- Aluminum melt purification
- High-temperature alloy precision casting technology
- Metal solidification structure control
- High pure metal electronic material preparation
