The ISM is mainly focused on the design and fabrication of new special materials and forming technology research, which has supported a number of national major engineering needs and has been widely used in many fields such as national defense equipment, aerospace and automotive rail transportation. Over the years, the ISM has undertaken more than fifty key national defense projects, key R&D programs, civil aircraft pre-research, civil aerospace pre-research, National Natural Science Foundation of China and international cooperation projects, with a total research expenditure of more than 380 million RMB. The ISM has published nearly 300 academic research papers in domestic and international academic journals and has been granted more than 100 Chinese national invention patents. It has been awarded the First Prize of Technical Invention by the Ministry of Education, the First Prize of Technical Invention by Shanghai Municipality and the First Prize of Technical Invention by China Nonferrous Metals Industry.

The Institute adheres to the spirit of "innovation and creation, scientific research for the country", with the motherland in mind, serving the society, facing the world's scientific and technological frontier, facing the major needs of the country, forging ahead and climbing to the top.
